ADF & DME Receivers

NDBs #

Used before the development of VORs to identify waypoints / locations, also broadcasts morse code over the line.

General #

  • NDB (Non-Directional Beacon): Ground-based radio transmitter

  • ADF (Automatic Direction Finder): The receiver installed in the aircraft that will give a relative bearing to the beacon

  • DME (Distance Measuring Equipment): Gives the range distance in nautical miles from the station.

Usage #

  • The needle will always point to the NDB.

NDB on sectionals (appear as freq number and morse code):

ADF Receiver:

Buttons:

  • ADF: Sets to ADF
  • BFO: Generate an audio tone to let you identify beacons
  • FLT/ET: Starts timer
  • SET / RST: Set / reset timer

DME #

Not used much anymore, shows the distance from the airport.

Add the channel / VOR frequency and it’ll show.
